it BOOK by Stephen king BOOK COVER ILLUSTRATION
PROJECT OVERVIEW Created as a course project for G223 Digital Manipulation II at The Art Institute of Pittsburgh, this redesign of the cover for the book IT by Stephen King was inspired by the red balloon imagery and the recurring theme of red and white found through all Stephen King novels. Rather than focus on the famous imagery of the clown, I wanted to make the piece appeal to a more contemporary audience by focusing on the kids that go into the sewer to fight the monster. I used all independent stock images and showed my skill with the Adobe Photoshop program with photo editing. METHODOLOGY Since this is a famous book with established imagery, my approach was to use an angle not as often explored and combine that with a piece of identifiable imagery. I explored several different concepts in my thumbnail sketches, and decided that the reflection of the characters in the red balloon would be ominous and symbolic of the theme. I wanted people to recognize the cover from a distance with the red balloon imagery, but then see a different theme revealed in the surface of the balloon. In all of Stephen King's writing their is a recurring color theme of red and white. Since there was so much detail inside the balloon's surface, the background needed to be simple. For my fonts, I chose Chiller for the all-lowercase title because it looks like a horror movie font and Gill Sans MT Bold for the author name and body text on the back cover for its legibility to contrast the decorative title font. typography
