AUSTIN POETRY FEST TYPOGRAPHIC POSTER DESIGN TYPOGRAPHY
PROJECT OVERVIEW Created for as a course project for G211 Advanced Typography at The Art Institute of Pittsburgh, this poetry slam event poster is a leading example of my skill with typography. I used the color palette of the local college football team to help create a unity with the local community and used the various descriptions of the event in the formation of the letters, highlighting certain adjectives, in the city’s name to develop a visual interest. METHODOLOGY I researched different points of interest in Austin, Texas and through my thumbnail sketches, attempted to find a way to make this event poster unique to the city. A couple different concepts I came up with were the rattlesnake design, made complete of text, and a Skyline silhouette of the city. I really liked the rattlesnake concept but for purposes of legibility, it didn't work. I then explored the concept of the name "AUSTIN" being made up of the text of the details for the event, highlighting specific details and adjectives to add a visual hierarchy. This concept was the strongest conceptually, but I needed to do more to tie the event poster to the city. Since Austin is a college town, I chose to use the colors of the University Of Texas. I also did study for typography using three different font families. I chose a combination of Azo Sans Uber, Eras Bold ITC, and Capitolium2 to create a visual hierarchy within the text. typography
